I'm looking at Yojimbo (trialling the demo) as a research tool - I'm a post-grad scholar of Classics and Ancient History. Currently what I'm doing with the tool is going through my university library website and drag and dropping the search results into a couple of collections I've created. I will also try it out with JSTOR (journal article database) later but for the moment I'm just trying it on the library website. I've turned the "web archive" feature on because the library website requires login to review the entries.
Anyway, what I'd *really* like to find if it's possible is two things:
1. automate the extraction of information from the page. E.g. the library call-number for the item. Pulling out the referencing information in a standard format would be a super-bonus! ((I realise this would be very difficult to achieve in a general sense perhaps - you'd need some way to specify "fields" in the data)).
2. this one is more important - I'd like to be able to "annotate" the entry. that is add a note attached to each reference with series of notes on the item (they would relate the item specifically to my research).
People who've done research degrees will understand what I'm doing here is a "annotated bibliography".
I've look at specific annotated biblio tools (like Endnote) but they are all TEH SUCK in one way or another, e.g. clunky windows ports, won't integrate drag and drop from my browser, and so on.
I see that Yojimbo has a "comment" field when I open the "inspector" on an item - it currently has the URL in it after I drag and drop - but this is not quite enough for my purposes. Also I'd like it be viewable in the list of items, and easily editable. Really just a new note - associated to another item - or a comment facility would just be enough.
Is there any way to make any of this - or some appropriate approximation of it - in Yojimbo?
If it is not possible, being an experienced programmer I'm very tempted to write my own tool (but would need to learn macintosh programming to do so). A pity Yojimbo is not open source so I could just add the necessary extensions myself. ;-(
thanks for any help you can offer.
Scot Mcphee.
